Impact of securitization of borders for the health care of undocumented migrants in Europe – insights from research on maternity care in Norway
The increasing securitization of European borders is an issue of our time, and it touches on some fundamental questions about how we as societies treat people trying to cross borders. To understand the impact of securitization on healthcare, we must understand the theory behind it, where it is enforced and what measures are used. This talk will take you from the fall of the Iron Curtain to the establishment of the Schengen agreement, through detention centres in Libya and over the Mediterranean, into maternal and child health centres and maternity wards in Norway.
Frode Eick is an associate professor at Lovisenberg Diaconal University College, Oslo, Norway. He has worked with issues concerning undocumented migrants and destitute mobile EU citizens since 2009 when he was involved in establishing the first health centre providing primary care for undocumented migrants in Norway. His PhD project sought to gain knowledge about the use of health services among pregnant women without a residence permit in Norway, what maternity care they receive, and the pregnancy complications and outcomes they experience.

The following webinar will be held on June 16, 2025 at 15:00 (CET). Zeliha Öcek will explore the growing threats to democracy, human rights, and academic freedom in Türkiye, and how these developments are linked to the EU’s prioritisation of border control. The talk will also reflect on what it means for migrants to live in a country positioned as the EU’s migration gatekeeper.
We would be honoured to welcome you to our conversations. Your insights will help deepen our network’s collective understanding of migration and health.
