Datum
01. Dezember – 03. Dezember 2021

At this conference we want to highlight welfare institutions, such as hospitals and schools, and the challenges they face in relation to health, wellbeing and environment. Different welfare institutions play an important role in everyday life and are related to shared societal expectations such as being healthy, safe and having secure environments that promote both physical and mental wellbeing.

Conference Call:

At this conference we want to highlight welfare institutions, such as hospitals and schools, and the challenges they face in relation to health, wellbeing and environment. Different welfare institutions play an important role in everyday life and are related to shared societal expectations such as being healthy, safe and having secure environments that promote both physical and mental wellbeing.

However, these welfare institutions are also facing a number of challenges, such as how to take care of an ageing population, how to handle communicable disease and how to create adequate learning environments against a backdrop of shrinking public resources. More recently, in the times of the Covid-19 pandemic, they are also forced to deal the challenges of new spatial rules that reset the norms for personal interaction. In addition, in the coming years welfare institutions will undergo significant change in relation to the implementation of e‑health initiatives and similar digitalization projects that will change how and where welfare is provided. It will not only influence the design and use of traditional healthcare facilities and educational settings, but also public places and residential environments of various kinds.

When we address these questions, we are obliged to consider issues like the environmental impact on healing and restoration, or the impact of the spaces we inhabit on issues such violence, crime and anti-social behaviour. By addressing this broad spectra of questions then, this call asks us to re-think design and management strategies for welfare institutions, for both today and tomorrow, from an intra and transdisciplinary stance.
